LEC Championship Preview: 20x Champion Women’s Indoor Track and Field

GORHAM, Maine – The no. 7 regionally ranked University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team will host the Little East Conference women's indoor track and field championship meet on Saturday, February 19 in Gorham. 

When and Where: Saturday, February 19, 2022 – University of Southern Maine – Costello Sports Complex Field House

Participating Teams: Castleton, Eastern Connecticut State, Keene State, Plymouth State, Rhode Island College, UMass Boston, and UMass Dartmouth

History: Since 1999, the Huskies have won all but two conference championships, with Rhode Island College claiming titles in 2000 and 2019. 

Preview: Going into the conference meet, the Huskies have posted a number of impressive marks this indoor season and have numerous competitors ranked in the top ten in the conference across various events.

Rosemary Train (Long Island, Maine/Cheverus), Olivia Jalbert (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little). Phoebe Slovenski (Cape Neddick, Maine/York), and Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) all hold top marks in their respective events. Train has the top time in the 600m run and is followed closely by teammate Emily Colby (Lunenburg, V.T./Lyndon Institute), who holds the third best time in the event. Train is also ranked second in the 800m run.

Jalbert has the LEC's top marks in both the high jump and long jump. The Huskies have been dominant in both events this season with Jalbert, Olivia Richmond (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy), Allie Gross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), and Cassandra Kane (Topshma, Maine/Mt. Ararat) holding the top four marks in the high jump and Jalbert, Richmond, and Ella Boucher (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) holding the top three in the long jump.

In the pole vault, Slovenski has posted the top height in the LEC this season, followed by teammate Sarah Fecteau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), who has the second highest mark in the conference. Boudreau leads a trio of throwers from USM who have the top three marks in the shot put in the LEC this season. Zoe Barnes (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and Hannah Corbett (Sebago, Maine/Bonny Eagle) are ranked second and third in the shot put.

The Huskies have also been dominant in sprint events with Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine/Freeport), Anna Reny (Gardiner, Maine/Cony), Heaven Conley (Ogunquit, Maine/Wells), Maddie Fornasier (South Burlington, V.T./South Burlington), and Emma Noonan (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) holding the second, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth fastest times in the conference in the 200m dash.

Distance athletes Lucy Knowlton (Portland, Maine/ Leavitt) and Olivia Mosca (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) are both ranked in the top ten in the mile, and Knowlton is currently second in both the 3000m run and the 5000m run. 

Southern Maine also currently holds the top times in the 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays.
