No. 14 Keene State Defeats Southern Maine 83-70

GORHAM, Maine  –  Sophomore Octavio Brito (Lincoln, RI) scored a career-high 37 points and senior Jeff Hunter (Hudson, Mass.) had 22 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double to lead the No. 14 Keene State College Owls past the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Hunter surpassed the 1000-point mark in his career when he scored his 13th point of the game as KSC extended its win streak to eight games.  Facing each other for the 118th time in series history, Keene leads the series 69-45.
 
Freshmen Mark Asare Jr. (Roswell, Ga.) and Tommy Whelan (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Huskies with 13 points each. Whelan added five rebounds and two assists.  Junior Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while senior Jason Lombard (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) had 10 points.  Senior Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) had a team-high 10 rebounds.

How It Happened:
  • KSC shot 55.6 percent (20-for-36) from the field in the first half led by 18 points from Hunter on 9-of-12 shooting to open up a 46-34 halftime lead on the Huskies.  Hunter's layup with 4:38 to play in the half gave KSC a 40-22 lead before the Huskies closed out the half on a 12-2 run led by seven points from freshman Tommy Whelan (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep). 
  • USM opened the second half with a 6-3 run and trailed by 10, 49-39, following one of two free throws from senior Jason Lombard (Anchorage, Alaska), but the Owls outscored the Huskies 21-10 over the next 7:17 to take a commanding 70-49 lead with 10:15 on the clock. Brito scored 13 of the Owls points in that stretch, including a trio of three-pointers.  
  • The Owls remained comfortably in front of Southern Maine and led 79-59 with 5:04 to play after a three-point play from Brito.  The Huskies closed out the final five minutes outscoring KSC 11-4 for the 83-70 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Keene State finished the game shooting 50 percent (32-for-64) from the field and 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from three.  Brito was 6-for-10 from three.  Southern Maine shot 44.1 percent (26-for-59) from the floor.
  • Led by Hunter's 15 rebounds, the Owls had a 38-39 lead on the boards.

The Huskies travel to Rhode Island College on Wednesday (7:30 pm) for a Little East Conference game, and then host Castleton University on Saturday (3:00 pm) before the semester break.
