Four Players in Double Figures as USM Defeats Castleton 72-59

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Jason Lombard (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) had a team-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to lead four players in double-figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Castleton University Spartans 72-59 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.

With the win, Southern Maine now leads the series 21-10.  The Huskies last faced Castleton in the 8/9 play-in game for the 2022 LEC tournament, winning 68-62.

The Records:
Castleton (3-7, 0-2 LEC)
Southern Maine (7-3, 1-2 LEC)

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine scored the first seven points of the game and led wire-to-wire for its first LEC win of the season.  Junior Simon Chadbourne (Westbrook, Maine) scored five of the opening seven points for USM.
  • The Huskies led CU 20-6 at the 12:05 mark following a driving layup from freshman Tommy Whelan (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham) and seemed in control of the game before the Spartans mounted a 14-5 run over the next six minutes to trail by two possessions 25-20 with 6:12 left in the half. Castleton's Joe Russell had five points in the run.
  • Both teams exchanged threes before back-to-back buckets from Lombard (jumper) and Chadbourne (three) gave the Huskies a 33-23 lead.  The teams again traded buckets before Chadbourne hit his third three of the half for a 38-27 Husky lead headed into the break.
  • A traditional three-point play from CU"s Joe Russell made it a 42-35 game at 15:19 in the second half, and anther bucket from Russell at 10:14 made it a 50-42 game in favor of the Huskies but it was as close as the Spartans would get for the remainder of the game.  Following Russell's layup at the 10:14 mark, USM outscored CU 16-2 to lead 66-44 with 5:21 to play. Two free throws from Lombard started the run, and USM got threes from freshman Jacob Farnham (Solon, Maine/Mt. Blue), Whelan and Dixon in the run.
  • Castleton outscored the Huskies 15-6 in the final minutes, but USM's lead was too great for the 72-59 final.
