Saint Joseph’s Shoots Past Southern Maine 75-52

WINDHAM, Maine  –  Griffin Foley scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks scored 29 points off 21 University of Southern Maine Huskies' turnovers to earn a 75-52 win in a non-conference men's basketball game Friday afternoon at Mike McDevitt Court.  The win gives the Monks the 2022 Costello Cup after a two-season deficit (2019, 2021).

Series History:  Today's contest is the 73rd meeting between the Monks and the Huskies, dating back to the first contest on November 30, 1972 – a 66-62 win for Southern Maine.  The Huskies took the last game between the two schools 86-74 on November 28, 2021.  USM leads the overall series 37-36.

Costello Cup: Today's contest also marks the 32nd game in the Costello Cup series between the two schools. The Costello Cup is presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rival schools and honors the late Dr. Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach for both the men's and women's programs.  SJC won the 2018 contest 83-79, while the Huskies claimed the 2019 cup 98-91, and the 2021 cup 86-74.  SJC leads the Costello Cup series 19-13.  USM has previously won the last two consecutively.
 
 
How It Happened:
  • SJC raced out to a 42-24 halftime lead holding Southern Maine to just nine first half field goals, and 28.1 percent shooting.  The Huskies turned the ball over 12 times in the first half.  While the Monks shots just 36.4 percent from the field, they knocked down eight three pointers and went 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
  • Foley led the way with nine first half points, followed by eight points from Nicholas Curtis.
  • Southern Maine fared better in the second half shooting 38.7 percent from the field (12-for-31), but the Monks countered shooting 52 percent (13-for-25).
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Freshman Tommy Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) led the Huskies with 12 points off of the bench shooting 6-of-12 from the field, adding five rebounds, three assists and a steal.  Senior Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) added 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, adding three steals. Junior Simon Chadbourne (Westbrook, Maine) had eight points. 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (1:00 pm) hosting Colby College in a non-conference match-up at Hill Gym.  The Huskies return to Little East Conference action on Wednesday (7:30 pm) against Plymouth State at home.
