Chagnon’s Hat Trick Powers Huskies Past Castleton

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) netted third goals for the second hat trick of her career as the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team extended their winning streak to three games with a 4-3 win over New England Hockey Conference opponent Castleton University.

History: The game was the 36th meeting between the two program and Castleton leads the series 21-11-4
 
The Records:  Southern Maine: 3-4-0 (3-2-0 NEHC); Castleton 3-2-0 (1-2-0 NEHC)
 
The Goaltenders:  Junior Haley McKim (Moncton, NB, Canada): 3-4-0, 40 saves, three goals allowed; Kirsten DiCicco: 2-2-0, 15 saves, four goals allowed.
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Chagnon scored the first of her three goals just 21 seconds into the game. Freshman Caroline Thompson (Crapaud, PEI, Canada) and senior Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth) recorded the assists.
  • In the final minute of the period Chagnon again found the back of the net with sophomores Madelyn McLeish (Dedham, Mass.) and Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) assisting.
  • The Spartans came to life in the second period and outshot the Huskies 10-4 in the frame while spending a large portion of the period on the attack. They cut the lead to 2-1 off a powerplay goal by Brooke Greenwood that was assisted by Moa Carlsson and Emery Bonner.
  • Chagnon collected the rebound of a Thompson shot and guided it into back of the net about three and a half minutes into the third to complete her hat trick. Senior Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School) had the second assist on the goal.
  • Crowley scored her first goal of the season 13:01 into the third period after scoring off her own rebound.
  • The Spartans threatened with two goals in less than 30 seconds shortly after Crowley's goal. Alex Johnson and Darby Palisi netted the Castleton goals.
  • McKim made 19 saves in the third period to persevere the lead and give the Huskies their third win in a row.
Up Next: The Huskies will play another NEHC game tomorrow at home against Plymouth State University at 3PM.
