Huskies Edged Out by Nationally Ranked Gulls

BEVERLY, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team narrowly lost a non-conference contest to the Endicott College Gulls, who are ranked ninth in the country by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Preseason Poll.
 
When and Where: Saturday, October 29, 2022 – Endicott College
 
Score: Gulls 4, Huskies 3
 
History: The Gulls now hold a 5-1-1 record against the Huskies.
 
The Records: Endicott: 1-0-0; Southern Maine: 0-2-0
 
The Goaltenders: Bailey Thieben: 1-0-0, 12 saves, three goals allowed ; junior Haley McKim (Moncton, NB, Canada): 0-2-0, 35 saves, four goals allowed.
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) got the scoring started with a goal less than three minutes into the contest. Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth) and Caroline Thompson (Crapaud, PEI, Canada/The Mount Academy) provided the assists.
  • Payton Hansen tied the game at 1-1 towards the end of the first period with Teaghan Hall and Makenzie Villiard assisting on the Endicott goal.
  • Endicott scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after two frames. Villiard scored a shorthanded goal to break the tie while Hall put the Gulls up 3-1.
  • Senior captain Peyton Dukas (Fairfield, Vt.) cut the deficit to a goal with her first goal of the season in the third period. Chagnon and Colbert notched assists on the goal.
  • The Huskies quickly converted a powerplay opportunity to tie the game with freshman Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, NB, Canada/The Mount Academy) finding the back of the net thanks to help from Eryn Taber (Tewksbury, Mass./Austin Prep) and Thompson, who notched her second helper of the game.
  • Endicott's Quin Healy broke the 3-3 tie with a goal following a blocked shot by teammate Kat Keith with less than two minutes left in the third.
  • The Gulls outshot the Huskies 39-15 in the contest.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will make their home debut on Friday, November 4 against Elmira College at 6PM. The game will be their first NEHC action of the season.
