Panagakos Goal Lifts Southern Maine Over Bates 1-0

GORHAM, Maine  - Graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine) collected a short through ball from junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) at the top of the box and deftly sent a shot in high over the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Bates College Bobcats 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Winning its sixth straight game, Southern Maine is now 9-1 on the season, and has defeated the Bobcats for the first time in 34 years, earning the program's second in 35 contests.  The Huskies last defeated Bates 3-2 on October 4, 1988.  The Huskies drew even with Bates 2-2 during the 2019 season.

The Records:
Bates (3-5-1)
Southern Maine (9-1-0)

How It Happened:
  • Panagakos' fourth goal of the season and her first game-winning goal of 2022 came in the 15th minute.  The goal came slightly against the run of play as Bates hand maintained a majority of the possession in the opening minutes earning two shots and a corner kick prior to the Huskies' goal.
  • Bates nearly found the equalizer in the 17th minute when Izzy Lussier put a shot on frame to the far post but Husky junior goalkeeper Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) came up big with the first of two diving stops in the game.
  • The Huskies had a pair of scoring chances late as a shot from graduate student Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) went off the far post in the 33rd minute, and then had another shot saved by Bates' Ruby Reimann in the 39th.
  • Both teams were even in shots (6-6) in the second half, but Bates had the first offensive opportunity in the second half when Elizabeth Patrick put a ball on target in the 47th, but again Atwood stood firm keeping it 1-0.  Reimann did the same for Bates in the 82nd, turning aside an attempt from the Huskies' Gould.
  • Gabby Hill-Junke nearly had the game-tying goal in the 88th minute for the Bobcats sending a bending ball towards the upper far post, but Atwood came up with a huge save diving to her right to keep the clean sheet, earning the shutout victory for Southern Maine.
