Southern Maine Downs Rhode Island College 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – Junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine), and sophomores Aly Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) and Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) each scored a goal as the University of Southern Maine Huskies extended their win-streak to 10 games defeating the Rhode Island College Anchormen 3-0 in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
 
With the result, Southern Maine improves to 12-1 overall and remains undefeated in the Little East Conference at 6-0.  RIC falls to 2-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the LEC.  Facing each other for the 29th time in series history, the Huskies lead the Anchormen 16-11-2.

How It Happened:
  • Gould scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season in the 30th minute to put the Huskies' up 1-0. She was assisted by junior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills). Roy fed Gould who was able to run onto the ball in space and score the game-winner.  
  • Roy picked up her second assist of the contest, laying a pass off to Veilleux at the top of the box, and Veilleux put it away inside the right post in the 41st minute for her second goal of the season.
  •  The Huskies went up 3-0 on a strong individual effort from McKenna in the 57th minute for the 3-0 final. The goal is McKenna's seventh of the season.
  • USM junior goalkeeper Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made five saves to earn the shutout.

Inside The Stats:
  • Gould's 14 goals tie the Huskies' record for goals in a season.  Gould is tied with Liz Brunton (2004-2005) who scored 14 in 2005.
  • Atwood's shutout is the ninth of the season for the Huskies' junior.  She now shares the program record for shutouts in a season with Jennifer Poliquin (1993-1998) and Taylor Canastra (2015-2018). Poliquin had nine shutouts in 1996, while Canastra had nine in 2018.  The Huskies' record for shutouts in a career is 19, and is also held by 2022 Husky Hall of Fame inductee Samantha Whitman '01 (1997-2000). Atwood has 13 shutouts to her credit in 29 career games.
