Southern Maine Shuts Out Maine Maritime 7-0 In Record Setting Effort

Atwood Sets Single Season Shutout Mark; Gould Sets SIngle Season Goals and Points Record

GORHAM, Maine  – Junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) set the school record for goals (16) and points (38) in a season, and junior goalkeeper Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) established a new record for shutouts (10) in a season as the University of Southern Maine Huskies dropped Maine Maritime Academy 7-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.

Facing each other for the seventh time in series history, Southern Maine leads the all-time series 6-0-1.  The Huskies have won 11 consecutive games and improve to 14-1 overall.  Maine Maritime dips to 6-7-1.

Southern Maine's 14 wins ties the program record for wins in a season (set in 2018, 14-5-1).  The seven goals in today's game gives the Huskies 51 on the season, and established a single-season goal record. The previous record of 50 was set in the 2021 season.

The Records:
Maine Maritime Academy (6-7-1)
Southern Maine (14-1-0)

How It Happened:
  • Gould and graduate student Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) each scored a goal before 10 minutes expired in the game to quickly put USM up 2-0 over MMA.  Gould's team-leading 15th goal of the season came off of a well-played ball in from graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine) while Berthiaume's goal was unassisted after a strong play into the box by the forward.
  • Sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) scored the first of her three goals in the game in the 33rd minute to give USM a 3-0 lead headed into the half.  McKenna and freshman Ciera Hill (Pembroke, N.H.) worked the give-and-go in the box for the score.
  • McKenna made it 4-0 less than a minute into the second half, touching the ball into the back of the net after a dangerous centering pass from Gould.  Gould followed with her second goal of the game after being sprung free into the 18 on a lead pass from Hill in the 55th.
  • Up 5-0, McKenna was fouled just outside of the 18 on a break, and then capitalized on the awarded free kick, placing it into the upper left corner for the hattrick in the 63rd.
  • Senior Katie Lynch (Bellingham, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 85th for the 7-0 final, and record setting goal. She was assisted on the play by freshman Kadynne Gratello-Smith (Biddeford, Maine).

Inside The Stats:
  • Gould's 16 goals so far in 2022 takes the single-season goals record from Liz Brunton (2004-2005) who scored 14 in 2005. With 16 goals and six assists for 38 points also establishes a single-season record for points in a season, previously held by Brunton (14-5-33) and graduate student Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) (13-7-33).
  • Atwood's 10th shutout gives her sole possession of the Huskies' single-season shutout record.  Atwood surpassed the previous record (9) for shutouts in a season held Jennifer Poliquin (1993-1998) and Taylor Canastra (2015-2018). Poliquin had nine shutouts in 1996, while Canastra had nine in 2018.  The Huskies' record for shutouts in a career is 19, and is also held by 2022 Husky Hall of Fame inductee Samantha Whitman '01 (1997-2000). Atwood has 14 shutouts to her credit in 30 career games.
  • Berthiaume's goal in today's game is her fourth of the season and the 40th of her career.  The Huskies' all-time leader in career goals and career points, Berthiaume has 97 points (40-17-97).
