Carson Nets Hat Trick as Huskies Roll Framingham State 6-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) recorded her first career hat trick to highlight a six-goal effort as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Framingham State University Rams 6-1 in a Little East Conference field hockey game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.

With the win, the Huskies bounce back from a 4-3 overtime loss on the road at Castleton to improve their LEC record to 7-1. Framingham State had its two-game win streak snapped to fall to 3-4 in conference.

The Records:
Framingham State (7-5, 3-4 LEC)
Southern Maine (9-5, 7-1 LEC)

How It Happened:
  • Carson started the Huskies' scoring tapping in an assist from sophomore Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) in the eighth minute.  Drinkwater doubled the Husky lead in the 21st minute on a spectacular goal off of a pass from Chloe Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region).  Arsenault received the inserted pass from Carson on a penalty corner and then lofted the ball over the defense to Drinkwater who was waiting on the far post for the tap in.
  •  USM led 3-0 in the 24th minute when Carson scored her second goal of the game – this time on a feed from junior Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine).
  • The Rams answered before the half, gaining some momentum, as Natalia Roehr collected a loose ball in the circle for her fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute, keeping FSU in the game at 3-1.
  • USM wasted little time in the second regaining a three-goal lead as senior captain Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) knocked in a goal in the 35th minute, before Carson rocketed in her third goal of the game in the 49th for a 5-1 lead following an assist from junior Mary Keef (Westbrook, Maine).
  • Ellis rounded out the Husky scoring in the 53rd minute, collecting a rebounded save for the brace.
  • USM freshman Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) picked up her second win of the season, making seven saves.  The Rams Kaitlin Loughlin played well in net, making six saves.

The Goalkeepers:
FSU, Kaitlin Loughlin (5-3), 60:00 6 GA, 6 saves
SM, Eleanor Folsom (2-1) 60:00 1 GA, 7 saves

Inside The Statistics:
  • Each team earned a defensive save in the game.  Haylee Girouard cleared a goal off the line for the Rams, while USM junior Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) had a defensive save in the first quarter. Cummings has three defensive saves this season.
  • Drinkwater's goal gives her a team-leading 12 on the season. She has 12 goals and three assists for a team-high 27 points.
  • Carson has scored in the last three games for the Huskies. With her three goals against the Rams, she has 10 goals and one assist for 21 points.  Three of her 10 goals have counted as game-winners, including tonight's game.
  • Ellis' two goals in tonight's game give her 32 for her career. She has 81 career points on 32 goals and 17 assists.  Her 32 goals are eighth all-time, while her 17 assists are fourth.  Ellis' 81 points rank eighth in USM career records.
