Huskies Fall to Beacons 5-2

BOSTON, Mass. – Behind a hat-trick from Junior Caley Kozich (Wexford, Pa.), the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons took down the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Boston.

When and Where: Saturday, January 22, 2022 – University of Massachusetts Boston – Edward T Barry Ice Rink

Score: UMass-Boston 5, Southern Maine 2.

History: This was the 33rd meeting between the two programs. The Beacons now lead the series 21-10-2.

The Records: Southern Maine: 10-8-0, 7-5-0 NEHC; UMass Boston: 8-9-0, 7-4-0 NEHC

The Goaltenders: Haley McKim (Moncton, NB/The Mount Academy): 33 saves, .892 save percentage, 9-8 record;  Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.)  34 saves, .944 save percentage, 8-9 record.

How It Happened/Inside the Box Score: 
-After a scoreless first period, Allie Reifler (Binghamton, N.Y. ) opened up a high-scoring second period with a goal in the eighth minute of play. 

-Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) responded just two minutes later for the Huskies to even things out 1-1.

-The Beacons opened up a 3-1 lead as Kozich and Rachael Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) each found the back of the net.

-In the third period, Kozich scored her second goal of the game to give the Beacons a 4-1 lead. 

-With four minutes left in the game, Georgie Snow (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) scored on a power play opportunity to bring the Huskies within two of the Beacons. 

-Julianne Nelson (Armstrong Lake, BC/Shawnigan Lake School) assisted both of the Huskies' goals on the night.

-The Beacons took advantage of an empty net as Kozich completed a hat-trick with thirty seconds left in the game.

Up Next: The Huskies will host Castleton on Friday, January 28 for a NEHC game at 6pm.
