King Goal Lifts Southern Maine Over Curry 1-0 in Overtime

USM is Undefeated in Back-to-Back Overtime Games to Starts 2021

MILTON, Mass.  –  Freshman Alan King (Scarborough, Maine) scored his first intercollegiate goal in the 94th minute to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 overtime victory against the Curry College Colonels in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Walter Katz Field.
Playing in their second overtime game in as many chances, USM picked up the win in its first ever meeting with Curry.  Both of the Huskies' goals this season are from freshman with King joining classmate Tyler St. Martin (Lebanon, NH) on the score sheet.

The Records:
Southern Maine (1-0-1)
Curry (0-1-1)

How It Happened:
  • USM and Curry battled through regulation scoreless.  Both sides were evenly matched with USM holding a slight 11-8 advantage in shots in the first 90.
  • Husky captain Hayes Estrella (Kennebunk, Maine/Thornton Academy) came up big for USM in the second half making all three of his saves to keep the game at 0-0.  Estrella made his final save of the game in the 85th minute turning back an attempt on goal from Curry's Ean McGonigle.
  • Headed into extra soccer, USM wasted little time earning the sudden victory with its first shot on goal – the game-winner from King – just 3:26 into the extra frame. King was assisted by freshman Trevor Sandler (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Matt Robichaud (Dracut, Mass.). Robichaud played the ball in on a free kick following a foul, and Sandler flicked the ball on to King making a run into the box for the goal.
