Huskies Blank Owls 4-0; Four Different Players Score for USM

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) scored the opener in the 24th minute and freshman Tyler St. Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) had a goal and an assist to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls in their home-opener Monday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Southern Maine is 2-0-1 through three games for the first time since the 1998 season. In 1998, USM finished the year 12-9-1.

The Records:
UMPI (0-1-0)
Southern Maine (2-0-1)

How It Happened:
  • Shaib scored his first goal of the season in the 24th minute after a well-place through ball from St. Martin into the box.  Shaib then took a deft touch around the keeper to line up an uncontested shot and give USM a 1-0 lead.
  • Trevor Sandler doubled the Huskies advantage less than two minutes later notching his first intercollegiate goal for a 2-0 lead. Sandler was a recipient of an assist from classmate Alan King (Scarborough, Maine).
  • In the 55th minute St. Martin made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season collecting a loose ball in the box and heading it home for the score. St. Martin's original shot was turned back by the UMPI keeper but found its way to St. Martin's head.
  • Sophomore Edwin Bonilla (Dracut, Mass.) opened his Husky account in the 85th minute for the 4-0 final.  Bonilla carried into the 18, made a strong cut back and blasted the ball into the net for his first intercollegiate goal.
Inside the Stats:
  • USM led UMPI 25-4 in shots and had a 12-3 lead in shots on goal.
  • The Huskies had seven corners, while UMPI had none.
  • St. Martin leads USM in goals and points with two goals and an assist in three games.  Sandler and King each have three points each with a goal and an assist.
The Goalkeepers:
  • Senior Hayes Estrella (Kennebunk, Maine/Thornton Academy) earned his second win of the season (2-0-0) starting and playing 58:05. Estrella came up big with one save on UMPI forward Diego Vega in 28th minute.  Vega was sprung free with a ball over the top and made a good turn to face Estrella one-v-one, but Estrella came up big with the save.
  • Junior Jacob Satires (Hampton, N.H.) played the final 31:55 and made two saves for USM.
  • Junior Keith Mank (Raymond, Maine) and freshman Cameron Kelley (Calais, Maine) split time in goal each allowing two goals and making four saves.
