Gould Brace Leads Southern Maine Past UMaine Farmington 3-1

USM Faces Husson on the Road Saturday (1:00 pm)

FARMINGTON, Maine –    Sophomore Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) scored two goals and senior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) added a third as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the UMaine Farmington Beavers 3-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Friday afternoon at Leib Field. The Huskies have outscored their opponents 8-1 in two games this season and are 2-0-0.

How It Happened:
  •  Gould put the Huskies up early scoring in the eighth minute off of an assist from sophomore Katherine Clancy (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely).  The assist is Clancy's first point of her USM career.
  • USM doubled its advantage on a strong individual effort from Berthiaume in the 13th minute.  Berthiaume received a pass from Gould on the left side of the box and beat UMF's Callie Hammer to the far post for her 27th career goal.
  • UMF halved its deficit in the 37th minute when Audrey Fletcher intercepted a pass in the 18, and found the back of the net for the Beavers' first goal of 2021. 
  • The Huskies outshot UMF 14-4 in the second half but did not break through until the 86th minute when Gould converted an assist from junior Katie Lynch (Bellingham, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) for her brace. 
Inside The Stats:
  • Berthiaume's goal in the 13th minute of today's game gives her three for the season and 27 overall in her career.  She is currently second in USM women's soccer career goal scoring records.  She has 27 goals, 11 assists for 65 points.  Her 65 points are second in USM records.
  • Gould has scored in two games consecutively and has three goals through her first two intercollegiate games.  Through her first two intercollegiate games, Gould has three goals and three assists for nine points. 
  • USM finished the game outshooting UMF 28-8 and had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Sophomore Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) earned the start and played the first 45 minutes. She made two saves, including a one-on-one at the top of the 18, and allowed one goal.  Freshman Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) played the final 45 and made a save. 
  • UMF goalkeeper Callie Hammer faced 14 shots on goal and turned in a strong performance making 11 saves.

            Southern Maine remains on the road and travels up to Bangor, Maine for a non-conference game at Husson University on Saturday (1:00 pm).  UMF hosts Plymouth State on Saturday (3:30 pm).
