de Andrade Lifts UMass Boston Over Southern Maine 2-1

Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (12 pm) in LEC Action

 
 
 GORHAM, Maine  –   Nilton de Andrade scored in the 85th minute to snap a 1-1 game and lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.
            In the 39th meeting between the two schools, UMass Boston now leads the series 23-14-2.

How It Happened:
  • UMass Boston got on the board in the 20th minute off of a set piece a few yards outside of the box.  Junior Emelson Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) cleaned up a loose ball and roofed into the top of the goal for his first score of the season.  Graduate student John Santos (Brockton, Mass.) sent the ball in creating the scoring opportunity. 
  • Southern Maine equalized in the 70th when sophomore Yahya Altaie (Westbrook, Maine) knocked in his first intercollegiate goal from eight yards out. Altaie benefitted from a well-placed centering pass from senior Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine). 
  • With regulation winding down, de Andrade scored a powerful game-winner for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.  The goal marked de Andrade's fifth game-winning goal of the season.
Inside the Stats:
  • UMass Boston outshot USM 22-3 and had a 9-2 advantage for shots on goal. 
  • The Beacons had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.  USM earned both of its corner kicks in the second half.
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Junior Jacob Statires (Hampton, N.H.) made seven saves for the Huskies and made several key defensive plays throughout the game.
  • Junior goalkeeper Quasim El-Ashkar (Salem, Mass.) made one save to earn the win for the Beacons.
Up Next:
            Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday 12:00 pm.
