Big Third Quarter Leads Southern Maine Past Husson 4-1

Ellis, Arsenault and Carson (2) With Goals for USM

GORHAM, Maine  -  Sophomore Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored two goals as part of a three-goal third period as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Husson University Eagles 4-1 in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday night at Hannaford Field.

In just the fifth meeting between the two schools, Southern Maine is picking up its second win over the Eagles and its first since a 4-3 overtime win in Bangor on October 22, 2018.  Husson leads the overall series 3-2.

The Records:
Husson (0-4)
Southern Maine (3-4-0)

How It Happened:
  • Senior Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored early in the opening quarter with a brilliant individual effort in the circle to put USM up just 2:35 into the game.
  • Husson equalized before the end of the quarter as junior Adelle Foss (Farmington, Maine/Spruce Mountain) had an unassisted goal in the 10th minute.  Foss' goal is her team-leading fourth of the season.
  • Both teams were scoreless in the second quarter and the game remained 1-1 at the half. USM registered two shots in the second frame, while Husson did not put a shot into play.
  • The Huskies quickly took the lead in the second half as sophomore Chloe Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) scored in the 32nd minute off of an outstanding pass into the circle from sophomore Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine/Belfast).  Banks carried the ball down the right side and beat two defenders in the circle before pushing the ball to Arsenault square in front of the cage for her third goal of the season.
  • Carson quickly made it a three-goal advantage scoring back-to-back goals in the 35th and 36th minute respectively.  Carson made it 3-1 when she redirected a laser of a pass from freshman Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle), before recording the brace on a centering pass from Ellis.
