Shaib Leads Southern Maine Over Thomas College 2-1 in Overtime

Huskies’ Senior Scores Both Goals for USM

GORHAM, Maine  –   Senior Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) scored the late-game equalizer and then sealed the win converting a penalty kick in the first overtime period to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Thomas College Terriers Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.

Playing for the 51st time in the series between the two schools, USM now leads Thomas 29-16-6 historically.  Both teams previously met on September 11, 2019 and battled to a 0-0 overtime draw.  The Huskies have played in four overtime contests this season and are 3-0-1 in extra time.

The Records:
Thomas College (3-1-0)
Southern Maine (4-2-1)

How It Happened:
  • Zenawi Bowen (St. George's, Bermuda) put the terriers ahead in the 70th minute roofing a shot into the back of the next after a powerful centering cross from junior Eric LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine).
  • With the game seemed locked up at 1-0, Shaib played the hero scoring the equalizer in the 86th minute.  Collecting forward pass from junior Ronan Hume (Marshfield, Mass.) just outside of the 18, Shaib took a touch towards goal and cut to free open space before scoring to the lower right side of the net.  Shaib's third goal of the season forced overtime action.
  • In overtime both teams had chances, registering two shots and two corner kicks each.  However, Shaib was able to seal the win for the Huskies in the 97th minute when USM was awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called in the box against Thomas.
  • Shaib scored the game winner with a shot into the lower right corner of the net for his fourth goal of 2021 and third game-winning goal of the season.
Inside the Stats:
  •  Thomas led the Huskies in shots 11-9, but the Huskies had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Thomas had eight of its 11 shots in the second half.
  • The Terriers led USM in corner kicks 9-7.
  • Shaib's four goals this season is a career-best.  In his career, the Huskies' midfielder now has six goals, and three assists for 15 points.
The Goalkeepers:
  • Junior Jacob Statires (Hampton, N.H.) made three saves in the win for the Huskies, and improved his 2021 record to 1-1-1.
  • Thomas goalkeeper Jonathan LeClair (Belmont, N.H.) made three saves for the Terriers.
