New England College Defeats Southern Maine 3-1

GORHAM, Maine – Three different players scored and goalkeeper Ellie Philben made several strong saves as the New England College Pilgrims defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win is the fifth straight for the Pilgrims who are now 7-1.  Southern Maine, coming off of a 1-0 Little East Conference win at Western Connecticut yesterday, are now 2-4.  This was the 41st meeting between NEC and USM but the first since the 2014 season.  USM leads the series 26-15.

The Records:
New England College (7-1)
Southern Maine (2-4-0)

How It Happened:
  • After a scoreless first period, Ava Challinor gave NEC a 1-0 lead early in the second, scoring her fourth goal of the season at 17:06.
  • NEC made it 2-0 minutes later, when Drea Chin knocked in a goal at 19:35 off of an assist from Jenna Ghrablowski.
  • The score remained 2-0 through the half, and looked to stay 2-0 through the third before USM broke through for its only goal of the game.  Huskies' sophomore Chloe Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) scored her second goal of the season cleaning up a loose ball in the circle a 44:01.
  • NEC quickly returned to a two-goal lead however, 3-1, scoring in the first minute of the fourth quarter.  Meaghan McCamish made a full extension deflection to push the ball into the cage off of a centering pass from Challinor at 46:01.
  • USM had a chance to pull to within one goal of the Pilgrims fairly quickly when the Huskies were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute but Philben made the stop to keep the advantage 3- 1.
