GORHAM, Maine -- The Western Connecticut State University Women's Tennis team won four singles points and one doubles point to grab a 5-4 win over Southern Maine on Saturday in Gorham. With the win, WestConn moves to 1-5 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 0-3. This conference match was the first of the season for the Huskies, who are now 0-1 in Little East play, while WestConn evened out to 1-1 against conference opponents.
Senior captain Emma Nassif (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and sophomore
Kenadi Sawyer (Windham, Maine/Windham) got off to a good start for the Huskies, winning Southern Maine's first point of the day with an 8-3 victory at first doubles over WestConn's Melanie Grasso (Newfairfield, Conn.) and Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) The Huskies also picked up a point at third doubles, winning by forfeit. Sophomores
Lily Madden (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and
Maggie Brock (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) fell to WestConn's Maria Madden (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Riofrio (Danbury, Conn.).
Nassif continued her sharp play, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Grasso. The Huskies picked up another point with a win by forfeit at six singles. Sawyer and Madden both dropped their singles matches 6-1, 6-0 to Rebelo and Madden, respectively, while Brock fell to Riofrio 6-4, 6-1. In the closest singles match of the day, Breanna Miclette (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) lost to Brooke Stillman (Danbury, Conn) 6-2, 7-5.
The Huskies are back in action Wednesday, September 22 as they travel to Thomas College for a non-conference match at 10:30am at Gorham High School.
