CASTLETON, Vermont – Brytney Moore scored in the 65
th and Alex Benfatti made six saves to lead the Castleton University Spartans to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.
The loss is the first of the season for the Huskies after opening the 2021 season with a 5-0-0 mark. In just the third meeting between the two schools, Castleton holds a 2-1 lead in the series, and has won the last two match ups consecutively.

How It Happened:
- Both teams battled through a scoreless opening half. Southern Maine held a slim 7-5 advantage in shots and in corner kicks 3-2. The Huskies threatened early registering a pair of shots on goal from Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) in the fifth minute, but Benfatti was able to stop both.
- Both teams had an attempt on frame to open the second half, before Moore broke through for the eventual game-winner. Moore registered her fourth goal of the season at 64:04 following an assist from Julia Carone.
Inside The Stats:
- Today's 1-0 loss to the Spartans is the first time that the Huskies have been shut out this season. USM has outscored its opponents 21-4 this season.
- USM finished the game leading 12-11 in shots (6-5 on goal). Neither team registered a corner kick in the second half.
The Goalkeepers:
- Sophomore Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass) suffered her first loss of the season and is now 5-1. She made four saves for the Huskies.
- Benfatti made three saves in each half for the shut out win for CU.

Southern Maine travels to Wentworth Institute for its next contest, a non-conference tilt on Wednesday (7:00 pm). Castleton heads to Middlebury on Tuesday (4:00 pm) for a non-conference game.
