GORHAM, Maine – Jacob Henderson knocked a one-touch shot into the back of the nets in the closing minutes of regulation to lead the Castleton University Spartans to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
It is the second straight win for Castleton over the Huskies in the 11-game series between the two schools Castleton leads USM 6-3-2.

How It Happened:
- Henderson hit a one-touch shot to the underside of the crossbar with 56 seconds remaining in regulation to save the Spartans from overtime and earn the LEC win on the road. Henderson received a well-placed pass in front of the Huskies' goal from Adolphe Alfani for his second goal of the season.
- Aflani, who has two of the Spartans 14 looks at goal, carried the ball down the right side of the field to the touch line and found Henderson open in the box for his first assist of the season.
Inside the Stats:
- CU outshot USM 14-6 and had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans also led USM in corner kicks 6-3.
- The Huskies had a pair of early chances on shots in the fourth and 23rd minute from senior Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) and Tyler St. Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) respectively, but Spartan goalkeeper Andrew Soto-Burgos was up to the task
The Goalkeepers:
- Junior Jacob Statires (Hampton, N.H.) made three saves in the loss and made several solid defensive plays to halt Spartan threats.
- Castleton's Soto-Burgos is 2-3 with the win, making two saves to earn his first shut out of 2021.
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Thomas College on Tuesday (6:00 pm) in a non-conference game. Castleton remains on the road and travels to UMaine Farmington for a non-conference game on Sunday (1:00 pm).
