Carson Goal Leads Southern Maine Over WestConn 1-0 in LEC Action

DANBURY, Conn.  –  Sophomore Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored in the 32nd minute to deliver a 1-0 win for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Huskies pick up their first victory over WestConn since a 2-1 win during the 2016 season.  USM leads the 15-game series between the two schools 11-4-0.

Southern Maine (2-3-0, 1-1 LEC)
Western Connecticut (2-3-0, 0-1 LEC)
 
How It Happened:
  • In an evenly played game statistically, Carson broke through for a goal after a scoreless first half early in the third period. Carson rattled the back of the cage in the 32nd minute off of an assist from senior captain Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue).  Carson's goal is her fourth of the season.    
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Both teams played evenly with Southern Maine holding a slight advantage in shots 9-7, but both WestConn and the Huskies registering three shots on goal each.
  • WestConn had a 6-4 margin in penalty corners.
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Husky junior Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) made three saves on all three shots on goal she faced to earn her first win of the season and first win via shut out. 
  • WestConn goalkeeper Kayla Hnasko made a save in the loss.
 
Up Next:
            Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (3:00 pm) hosting New England College in a non-conference game at Hannaford Field.  Western Connecticut travels to William Patterson on Thursday (7:00 pm) in a non-conference match up.
