Jacques Late Game Goal Leads Monks Over Southern Maine 3-2

Huskies' Hannah Banks Scores First Intercollegiate Goal in Loss

GORHAM, Maine –  Abbie Jacques scored with less than three minutes left in regulation to lift the St. Joseph's College Monks to a 3-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Monday night at Hannaford Field.

The win is the third straight in the 24-game series between the two schools.  St. Joseph's won the last meeting 2-1 in overtime on September 11, 2019.  The Huskies last defeated SJC 1-0 in Standish during the 2017 season.  USM leads the overall series history 16-8.

The Records:
Saint Joseph's (3-1-0)
Southern Maine (1-3-0)

How It Happened:
  • SJC dominated the game statistically and led USM 1-0 early as Olivia Esposito scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute.  Alexa Gutowski carried the ball down the right side and into the circle and sent in a perfectly placed all in front of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
  • USM equalized just before the half as freshman Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored in the 29th minute to register her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
  • The Monks regained the lead in the second half as Alexis Beardsley scored in the 37th minute, but the Huskies responded quickly on freshman Hannah Banks' (Belfast, Maine) goal in the 39th minute.  The goal was the first of Banks' career.
  • With neither team breaking through after the 39th minutes and the clock winding down, overtime seemed likely before Jacques laced in the game-winner for her first goal of the season.

Inside The Stats:
  • SJC had a 19-5 lead in shots and a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.  The Monks also held a significant advantage in penalty corners at 12-0, registering seven penalty corners in the first half.
  • With the expection of USM's Drinkwater, all other goal scorers notched their first goal of the 2021 season.

The Goalkeepers:
  • Husky junior Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) made six saves in the loss.  She is 0-3.
  • SJC goalkeeper Kassidy Collins improved to 3-0 and made one save.
