Late-Game Stunner From Gould Keeps USM Undefeated: Huskies 3, UNE 2

Southern Maine is 5-0-0

GORHAM, Maine –   Freshman Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) laced a goal into the top right corner with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-2 win over the University of New England Nor'easters in a non-conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
 
Meeting for the 29th time, with today's win, USM has evened the series with UNE at 13-13-3.  In the last meeting, October 8, 2019, UNE defeated USM 2-1.

How It Happened:
  • USM led the game 2-0 through 72 minutes played following goals from junior Meghan Galante (Epping, NH) and senior Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) in the 38th and 55th minutes ,respectively. 
  • UNE's Bella Reil halved the Nor'easters deficit in the 73rd minute, cleaning up a deflected ball in the box.  Reil was set up for the goal by Lizzie Frattaroli.  In the 85th, Caroline Meuse's low driven ball on a set-up from Meredith Kennedy tied the game up and the game looked as though it were heading to extra time.
  • Tori Keyes put one on frame in the 88th for UNE but Husky freshman goalkeeper Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made the save.
  • With the game in its final seconds, Gould received a short pass from classmate Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) outside of the box.  Gould took a touch and then put the ball beyond the outstretched hands of UNE keeper Sydney Gillingham. 
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Gould's game-winner is her second of the season and give her a team-leading six goals on the season.  She has six goals and three assists for 15 points. 
  • Allain's goal is the first of the season for the center midfielder.  She now has 13 goals and 11 assists in her career for 37 points.  She is tied for 15th in career goals, and fifth in career assists.  Her 37 points are 13th all-time.
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Sophomore Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) improved to 5-0. She made seven saves in the win, including four in the second half when UNE outshot USM 9-6.
  • Gillingham made five saves in the loss for UNE. 
 
Up Next:
            Southern Maine hosts Lasell University on Wednesday (4:00 pm) in a non-conference match up.  UNE travels to Bowdoin on Wednesday (4:00 pm). Lasell is 1-2, coming off of a 3-0 win vs. Emmanuel.
