GORHAM, Maine – Freshman
Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) became the first University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey player to score four goals in a game since 2014 to lead her team to a high-scoring 6-5 win over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.
In an impressive debut, Drinkwater matched the feat of former two-time Little East Conference Player of the Year Peyton Dostie who is the most recent Husky to notch four goals in a game. Dostie accomplished the total twice, most recently on September 16, 2014 in a win over New England College. USM's single game record for goals is five set by Angela Cooke in 1973.
Both teams were playing in their season-opener. Meeting for the sixth time, USM has now won twice in the series. Thomas was a 1-0 victor in their last meeting on September 15, 2019.

TC went up two goals in the 23rd minute as Christina Denis (Waterville, Maine) tapped in a goal.
- USM cut its deficit to one as Drinkwater scored the first of her four goals before the half. Drinkwater redirected a pass from senior Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) as the Huskies went into the break down 3-2.
- In the second half, Drinkwater scored on an assisted tally in the 38th minute to tie the score, before sophomore Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored her first intercollegiate goal in the 49th minute for a 4-3 Husky advantage.
- Drinkwater secured the hat trick and gave USM a 5-3 in the 51st assisted by Arsenault. However, Thomas fought back to make it 5-4 on a goal from freshman Grace Slenker on an assist from Reny just moments later in the 52nd minute.
- Carson fed Drinkwater for her fourth goal with a driven pass across the front of the cage in the 55th minute for a 6-4 lead. Drinkwater's final goal proved to be the difference maker as Reny scored on a corner in the closing seconds for the 6-5 final.
