GORHAM, Maine – Coming off of a prolific 2021 season, University of Southern Maine senior
Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) joined an elite group of Husky student-athletes becoming one of 10 Southern Maine individuals to earn Academic All-American ® honors with her selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-American ® Division III Softball Second Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A 2021 National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) All-Region pick and a first team All-Little East Conference catcher, Tinsman becomes the second USM softball player to earn the prestigious academic accolade for her outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the field, joining former Husky standout Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine) who earned third team honors in 2017.
Tinsman, along with Husky baseball standout Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) become the ninth and 10
th USM student-athletes to earn Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA since 2000. Seymour was recognized as a second team Academic All-American today. Both spring sport student-athletes join a list of distinguished members of Husky Athletics including standouts Alison Drury (women's college division fall/winter at-large, third team, 2000), Darryl Whitney (men's cross country/track and field, second team, 2003), Ashley Marble (women's basketball, first team, 2007), Molly Carl (women's cross country/track and field, third team, 2012), Chris Bernard (baseball, second team, 2014), and Daniel Del Gallo (wrestling, second team, 2016), Caron (softball, third team) and CJ Moody (track & field, third team 2019, second team 2020).
Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in academics and athletics, to be nominated for CoSIDA's Academic All-District and Academic All-America® honors, the student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher and be sophomore standing. Tinsman carries an outstanding 3.78 grade point average as a Nursing student.
"Ashley completed a remarkable career that is marked with success on and off of the field," noted USM head coach
Sarah Jamo, the 2021 LEC Coach of the Year. "She is an excellent example of what it takes to be a successful student-athlete and the type of student-athlete USM is known for. She is committed, a hard-worker and leads with a team-first attitude. I am very proud of her achievements and look forward to seeing all of her success in the future."
A two-time All-Little East Conference pick, Tinsman earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region (third team) honors in 2021. Setting the school record for RBI (50) in a season and in a game (7), Tinsman hit a strong .434, collecting 56 hits in 129 at-bats with 10 doubles, a triple and eight home runs. She had a slugging percentage of .713. Her 50 RBI and 56 hits led the LEC, while her eight home runs were third. Defensively, Tinsman's ability behind the plate helped USM to the best fielding percentage in the Little East and lowest team ERA in the conference.
Tinsman and the Huskies finished with a remarkable record of 31-6-1, and a record of 15-1 in Little East Conference play. During the season, USM set a school record for consecutive wins (15) and established the program's best winning percentage (.829). USM's 2021 LEC regular season crown was the first since the 1999 season and the Huskies' berth into the NCAA tournament was their first in 22 seasons.
