GORHAM, Maine – Traveling to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Sunday, May 2, the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's track and field team will look to win its sixth straight Little East Conference outdoor track and field championship.
The History: Dominating the conference in the last decade, the Huskies go into the meet looking for their sixth consecutive conference title. Consistently challenging the Huskies, UMass-Dartmouth has been the runner-up team each of the past five years. In 2018, Southern Maine edged the Corsairs by just one point.
Both Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) and Masho Gebremikael (Portland, Maine/Deering) were individual event winners in the 2019 championship and return this year seeded first in the 800-meter run and 10,000-meter run, respectively.
The Team: Two-sport student-athlete senior
Antoine Grace (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) has been a consistent point scorer for the Huskies this season, picking up multiple wins in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. He and junior
Jaequan Grant (East Granby, Conn/East Granby) are seeded first and second in the 100 and first and fifth in the 200.
Senior Cam Labrie, a key member of the Huskies' 4x400 meter relay, is seeded second in the 400-meter dash, an event in which he placed fourth in 2019. Southern Maine will also look for a strong performance from its 4x100 meter relay, which is currently ranked second in New England.
Enjoying a breakout freshman campaign, pole vaulter Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) is undefeated in competition this spring. Drummey's season best of 5.10m (16'8.75") currently ranks third in the nation. Also a big contributor for the Huskies in field events is sophomore Carson Gross (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain), whose 1.95m (6'5") long jump mark is among the top 50 in the nation. Gross has won the high jump in all but one meet this season and will look for another event win this weekend.
The Matchup: Prior to the conference championship, Southern Maine has competed against Eastern Connecticut, Keene State, Plymouth State, and Rhode Island College, coming away with wins against each. The Huskies will look to continue their dominance this weekend and secure another conference championship.
