Big Third Quarter Propels WestConn Past Southern Maine

            DANBURY, Conn. -- Western Connecticut State University outscored the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-1, in the third quarter and went on to defeat Huskies 23-12 in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Westside Athletic Complex.
            The win was the first of the season for WestConn, leveling its record at 1-1 overall and in the conference.  The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in LEC play.
            Sophomore Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) led the WestConn offense with seven goals.  Senior Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, N.Y.) contributed five markers, junior Donald Schaumloffel (Wantagh, N.Y.) chipped in with four goals and one assist, and senior Timothy Yannucci (Coram, N.Y.) had three goals and three assists.  Senior goalie Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, N.Y.) stopped 16 shots to earn his first win.
            Senior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) paced the Huskies' offense with three goals and two assists.  Rookie Andrew Lawrence (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) fired home three goals and had one assist.  Junior Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering), senior Joe Cullinan (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) and sophomore Aidan Mitchell (Brunswick, Maine) had two goals apiece,  Junior goalie Josh Cahill (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) made seven saves over 54:57,  Rookie Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) had three saves over the final 5:03.
            Dundas' third goal of the game, and 96th of his career, gave USM a 9-8 lead early in the third quarter.  WestConn responded with nine consecutive goals to close the quarter leading 17-9.  Aronow had three goals in the quarter, and Yannucci chipped in with two.
            WestConn outscored USM 6-3 in the final quarter.
            Both sides took 47 shots in the game, and WestConn had a 37-33 edge in ground balls.  WC faceoff men,  senior Zak Santoemma (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn./Fitch) combined to win 22 of 35 faceoffs and collect 14 ground balls.  WestConn also took advantage of its man-up opportunities converting on 5 of 8 chances.
            Southern Maine is scheduled to play a non-conference game at Salem State University this coming Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).  WestConn travels next Saturday to Plymouth State University.
