#7 Southern Maine, Rhode Island College Trade Shutouts

Huskies Take Game One 14-0; Anchormen Come Back to Win Game Two 10-0

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior right-hander Ben Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) threw a three-hit, seven-inning shutout in the opening game as the seventh-ranked Huskies traded shutouts with the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Flaherty Field.
The Huskies took the opener 14-0 behind Lambert's masterful pitching and a 17-hit attack.  In the second game, RIC senior Tyler Shemick (Foster, R.I./La Salle Academy) and junior Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) combined for a three-hit shutout to give the Anchormen a 10-0 victory and a split of the doubleheader.
The split leaves the Huskies at 9-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.  The Anchormen are 4-4 overall and 1-1 in LEC play.  The two teams will play a non-conference doubleheader at Rhode Island College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).

Game One
The Huskies jumped on Anchormen rookie starter Seth Daly (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) in the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead.  The first six Huskies reached base via base hit or a walk to produce four runs.  Freshman Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) drove in the first run with a single, and junior Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) followed with an RBI double.  After a walk loaded the bases, sophomore Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) dropped a single into left center to score Seymour and Troiano.
USM added a run in the second on Troiano's RBI double, and three more in the third to make it 8-0.
The Huskies pushed across six runs in the sixth inning to put the 10-run rule into play.  Lambert retired the Anchormen in order in the seven to collect his first career shutout, and third win of the season.  Lambert finished with six strikeouts and gave up three walks.
Seniors Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.), Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) and Troiano lead the Huskies' 17-hit attack with three hits apiece.  Seymour and Wilson each had a pair of hits and three RBI.

Game Two
Shemick and USM junior Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) hooked up in a scoreless duel through three innings before the Anchormen nicked Joy for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
RIC used a leadoff walk to junior Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, R.I.), a stolen base, an infield error and a double play to produce a run in the fourth.  In the fifth, rookie Cameron Santerre (Bristol, R.I./Mt. Hope) was hit by a Joy offering, stole second, advance to third a sacrifice fielder's choice from senior Nate Vigeant (Coventry, R.I./St. Raphael Academy), and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman John Willette (Johnstown, R.I./Bishop Hendricken).
The Anchormen put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning to make it 7-0, and three more in the ninth for the 10-0 final.  D'Ambra drove in two runs in the seventh with a triple to right field, and two more in the ninth with another triple down the right field line.
Shemick went the first seven innings on the hill allowing three hits and two walks while fanning seven.  Gamelin came on the pitch two scoreless frames without giving up a hit.  He walked one and struck out three.
