James Sinclair (Portland, Maine) spun a one-run gem in game two and senior
Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) drilled a three-run home run as part of a decisive five-run third inning as the nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies bounced back from a game-one loss to defeat the Rhode Island College Anchormen 13-1 and salvage the split in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Pontarelli Field.
Finishing the day 1-1, USM is now 10-3 overall. The Anchormen are 5-5. The Huskies and Anchormen split their LEC doubleheader a day ago. Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday in a non-conference game against Colby College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm. GAME 1: Rhode Island College 4, Southern Maine 1
- Sophomore Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) struck out 10 batters over seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks to pick up the win on the mound for RIC. Freshman Terry Murray (Norfolk, Mass.) pitched a strong inning of relief in the eighth and did not yield a hit or a walk, setting up junior Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, R.I.) for his second save of the season. Entering in the ninth, Gamelin allowed one hit and a walk and struck out two.
- The Huskies scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from junior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine). Sophomore Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) hit a one-out double to left center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Komulainen picked up the RBI.
- USM remained in front 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when freshman Cameron Santerre (Bristol, R.I.) hit a three-run home run to put his club ahead 3-1. RIC added an important insurance run in the seventh following an RBI single from freshman John Willette (Johnson, R.I.).
- USM senior Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine) absorbed the loss for the Huskies. Feeney pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on four hits and five walks. He struck out six. Senior Gavin Arsenault (Dixfield, Maine/Dirigo) finished the final three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk.
GAME 2: Southern Maine 13, Rhode Island College 1 (7 innings)
- With the game tied up 1-1 through two innings, USM plated five runs in the top of the third to take control of the game. With one out, USM had runners on first and second following a hit-by-pitch for senior Andrew Olszak and a single up the middle from Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine). With two on, Hapworth hit a three-run shot over the left field fence to make it 4-1 in favor of the Huskies. USM scored two more on a pair of RBI fielder's choice plays from Komulainen and Sam Trioano (South Portland, Maine).
- The Huskies added two more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly from Troiano and a wild pitch. In the sixth, the Huskies made it 11-1, scoring three more runs on four hits. Junior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a two-run double in the inning, while sophomore Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) had an RBI single.
- In the seventh, USM made it 13-1 with an RBI fielder's choice from Wilson and an unearned run on a throwing error.
- USM's Sinclair was outstanding in the win. Sinclair allowed one earned run in seven innings, scattering five hits and three walks. Picking up four strike outs in the game, all five hits against Sinclair were singles.
- USM connected for 14 hits in the win. Hillier was 4-for-5, including a double, with an RBI and two runs scored. Hapworth, Wilson, Searle-Belanger, and Vesosky each had two hits.
