GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore
Julia Pomerleau (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) had 15 kills and four blocks as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's volleyball team defeated the visiting Husson University Eagles 3-0 (25-18, 25-7, 25-11) in a non-conference match Thursday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the abbreviated season. The visiting Eagles were playing their season-opening match.
Pomerleau was dominating at the net knocking down 15 kills on 17 attempts to lead the Huskies. As a team, USM compiled a .405 attacking percentage on 38 kills with eight errors on 74 attacks.
Rookie
Brianna DellaIacono (Moodus, Conn./Hale Ray) added eight kills, and senior
Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) contributed six kills to the Husky attack. Junior
Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had five kills and passed out 29 assists.
Junior
Sophia Pagliarini (Johnston, R.I./La Salle Academy) led the Eagles attack with six kills, and sophomores
Cheyenne Young (Eagle River, Alaska) and
Eryka West (Meriden, Conn.) had five kills apiece. Sophomore
Cat Torres (San Antonio, Texas) had 15 assists.
The Huskies raced out to big early leads and never trailed in the first two sets to take command. The Eagles stayed close through the early stages of the third set, enjoying their only lead of the night at 3-2. Leading 6-5, the Huskies went on a 6-0 run behind the serving of Jannarone to take a 12-6 lead and never looked back.
Southern Maine will close its Covid-19 abbreviated season on April 24 with a trip to the University of New England. Husson will host Saint Joseph's College on April 23.
