BOSTON -- Junior Gavin Admirand (Marshfield, Mass.) scored eight goals and dished off two assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons to a 25-15 Little East Conference victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies at James Cotter Field on Tuesday night.
The game was the season opener for the Beacons. The Huskies slip to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Admirand was one of 11 players to tally a goal for the Beacons. Senior Conor Lenfest (Waltham, Mass.) added three goals and three assists, and graduate student Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) contributed three goals and two assists. Senior Joe Meyers (Carmel, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals.
For the Huskies, senior
Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) tallied six goals and two assists, and junior
Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) had four goals and one assist. Five other Huskies had one goal. Rookie
Andrew Lawrence (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) had a game-high four assists.
Sophomore Trevor Koppy (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Charlie Cook (Bedford, Mass.) split the goaltending chores for the Beacons. Koppy played the first three quarters allowing nine goals and making 13 saves. Cook surrendered six goals and made six saves in the final quarter. Freshman
Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) stopped 19 shots in the Husky goal.
The Beacons came out of a high-scoring first quarter with an 8-6 edge. Admirand scored three times, and Meyers twice, to offset three markers for James and two from Dundas.
UMass Boston dominated the scoreboard in the second and third quarters, outscoring Southern Maine 14-3. Six different Beacons found the net in the second quarter as the home side's lead grew to 15-8 at halftime. Admirand had three goals, and Prozinski two, in the third quarter. Dundas had the lone USM goal in the third.
Southern Maine doubled up on UMB in the final quarter as Dundas scored three times.
The Huskies are scheduled to host Keene State College in a Little East Conference game on Saturday. No spectators are allowed. UMass Boston will travel to Castleton University on Saturday.
