GORHAM, Maine -- Fourteen different players, led by senior
Joe Nutting (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and rookie
Andrew Miller (East Longmeadow, Mass.), scored goals as the visiting Keene State College Owls rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 26-6, in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Hannaford Field.
The unbeaten Owls raised their record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their second straight game to fall to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in LEC games. Prior to the start of the game, the Huskies honored their three seniors,
Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.),
Joe Cullinan (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) and captain
Steve Gilbert (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill).
Nutting and Miller each found the net for five goals apiece to pace the Owls' balanced attack. Nutting also dished out two assists, and Miller had one assist. Freshman
Colby Quiet (Hopkinton, N.H.) added three goals and one assist, and dominated the faceoff dot winning 27 of 32 faceoffs and scooping up 17 ground balls.
Dundas had three goals, all in the first quarter, to lead the Huskies. Cullinan and sophomores
Aidan Mitchell (Brunswick, Maine) and
Tanner Hebert (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner Area) each had a goal.
Dundas' three first-quarter goals kept the Huskies even on the scoreboard (3-3) through the first 11 minutes of play. Miller's goal with 2:49 left in the quarter put the Owls ahead to stay. The quarter would end with the Owls up 5-3.
Keene State dominated the second and third quarters outscoring Southern Maine 19-3 to open a 24-6 lead after three quarters.
The Owls piled up a 63-21 advantage in shots during the game, and held a 43-25 edge in ground balls.
Keene State used four goalies during the course of the game. Senior
Chase Chamberlain (Box, N.H.) played the opening half and recorded two saves to get the win. Classmate
Alex Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) followed making one save in the third quarter. Sophomore
Baylor Bridges (Stamford, Conn.) and rookie
Charlie Giuliotti (Reading, Mass.) split the fourth quarter and combined for two saves. Southern Maine rookie
Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) stopped 17 shots.
Southern Maine is scheduled to host Plymouth State University for an LEC game on Wednesday. Keene State will host Castleton University for a conference game Tuesday evening.
