GORHAM, Maine -- Junior
Quinn Doyle (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals as the visiting Colby College Mules defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-1 in non-conference men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Mules a split of the season series, avenging a 2-1 loss to the Huskies on March 13. The Mules finished their Covid-19 abbreviated 2021 season at 1-3-0. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak snapped and finished the year 2-2-0.
With the game tied 1-1 midway through the second period, Doyle tipped a shot from junior
Michael Thomas (Park Ridge, Ill.) over the shoulder of USM sophomore goalie
Gabriel Couture (Boucherville, Quebec) for a power play goal and a 2-1 Colby lead.
Doyle scored his second marker at 3:50 of the third period, depositing a centering pass from sophomore
Drew Burke (North Andover, Mass.) into the open left side of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Burke added a goal at 11:48, and sophomore
Alex Bourhas (L'Ile Blizard, Quebec) tacked on an empty-net short-handed goal at 17:48 for the final count.
Colby took a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza as junior
Brian Sanzone (Schaumburg, Ill.) set up sophomore
Jacob Thousand (Waunakee, Wis.) 20 feet out in front of Couture for a shot into the top left corner.
Southern Maine got the equalizing goal at 4:45 of the second period. Junior
Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.) converted a pass from sophomore
Curtis Judd (Saco, Maine) into his second goal of the season. Senior
Maverick Lynes (Christina Lake, B.C.) kept the puck in along the blue line and sent Judd down the left side to set up Withers.
Rookie goalie
CJ Hapward (West Caldwell, N.J.) was solid in goal for Colby stopping 20 of 21 shots. Couture finished with 18 saves for the Huskies.
