GORHAM, Maine -- Senior
Jessie Scott's (Barre, Vt.) unassisted goal in the latter stages of the second period proved to be the only goal of the game as the visiting University of New England Nor'easters defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 1-0 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The game was the season opener for the Nor'easters. The Huskies slip to 1-1-0 for the abbreviated 2020-21 season. The two teams will meet again in the second half of the weekend home-and-home series at UNE on Sunday (4 p.m.).
The teams had skated through 34 minutes of scoreless play when Scott intercepted a clearing pass in the USM zone and skated in alone on rookie goalie
Haley McKim (Moncton, N.B.). Scott's wrist shot from 20 feet out beat McKim inside the left post at 14:14.
UNE senior netminder
Julia Benjamin (Tolland, Conn.) made the goal stand up and finished the game with 22 saves for her sixth career shutout. Benjamin did get some help from the crossbar in the third period when senior
Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) hit the iron from the left-wing circle.
McKim played well in defeat stopping 27 shots.
