Keene State Runs Past Southern Maine

KEENE, N.H. –  Nate Siow scored a game-high 22 points to lead three players in double figures as the Keene State College Owls defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 101-53 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Spaudling Gymnasium. 
 
The Records: 
Southern Maine (5-5, 0-1 Little East)
Keene State (6-1, 1-0 Little East)
 
Series History: Facing each other for the 112th time in series history, Keene leads the series 67-45. Keene State has won the last four games consecutively over the Huskies. Southern Maine last earned a win against the Owls, 85-81 in overtime on January 5, 2019. 

Standout Huskies:  Cody Hawes, 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 steal; Marcus Christopher 10 points, 6 rebounds.
 
Standout Owls:. Nate Siow 22 points (9-for-12 FG); 5 assists, 4 steals; Jeff Hunter 18 points (8-for-10 FG), 8 rebounds, 2 steals; Octavio Brito 14 points (6-for-11 FG).
 
How It Happened: 
  • Keene State scored 56 first-half points and shot 51.1 percent (23-for-45) from the field in the first half to secure a commanding 56-16 lead over USM at break. Scoring the first six points of the game on a pair of layups from Siow and a layup from Hunter, the Owls led wire-to-wire in the contest.
  • Siow had the Owls up 32-10 midway through the half (9:20) scoring on of its 17 first half points.  The Huskies' Christopher hit a bucket in the paint but the Owls scored the next 12 points of the game and finished the half on a 24-6 run.
  • The Huskies' fared better offensively in the second half but could not overcome their first half deficit.  Keene State outscored USM 45-37 in the second stanza. Hawes had eight of his 12 points in the second half for USM.
 
Inside the Stats: 
  •  Forcing USM into 27 turnovers, KSC scored 33 of its points off of Husky miscues.
  • The Owls also scored 17 points on second-chance buckets thanks in part to 14 offensive rebounds.  
 
Up Next: 
Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and will host Rhode Island College on Wednesday (7:30 pm).
