Rhode Island College Defeats Southern Maine 90-81

GORHAM, Maine  –   Senior Keyshaun Jacobs (Lynn, Mass.) and junior Shion Darby (Peekskill, N.Y.) combined for 69 points to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 90-81 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
 
The win is the third consecutive for RIC.  Darby surpassed the 1000-point mark of his career with his 18th point in the contest.  Sophomore Jordan Riley (Windsor, Conn.) joined Jacobs and Darby in double-digits adding 14 points.

Series History: Facing each other for the 140th time in series history, Rhode Island College leads the series 75-65.  RIC has won last nine contests against Southern Maine.  The series history dates back to the 1970-1971 season.

Standout Huskies:  Senior Jacobe Thomas (Houston, Texas/Davis) 25 points (10-for-25); 5 rebounds, 3 assists; junior Marcus Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists; sophomore Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) 18 points; sophomore Trevor Ward (West Park, Fla./McArthur) 11 points, 4 assists; junior Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) 9 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds.
 
Standout Anchormen: Jacobs 36 points, (8-for-14 3FG); 4 rebounds, 3 steals; Darby 33 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists; Riley 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists; Sophomore Ousmane Kourouma (Woonsocket, R.I.) 11 rebounds, 4 steals.
 
How It Happened: 
  • Making eight of its first 16 field goals and snagging four offensive boards in the opening 10 minutes of the game, Southern Maine jumped out ahead of RIC 22-14.  Thomas and Christopher carried the Huskies offense in the opening minutes scored 10 points each.
  • Down 22-14, RIC ran off a game-changing 18-0 run to surge ahead of the Huskies 32-22 with 4:00 on the clock. Jacobs (8 points), Riley (6 points), and Darby (4 points) all factored in the run for the Anchormen.  
  • USM's Dixon canned a three to spell the RIC run, but the Anchormen counted with eight consecutive points, all from Jacobs (two threes and a pair of free throws, to lead 40-25 with 1:14 left in the half. RIC led 43-27 at the break as Jacobs scored 23 of his 36 in the first half.
  • Exchanging baskets for most of the second half, RIC led by 21, 88-67, with 2:08 to play after a pair of free throws from Riley. After Riley's free throws, USM outscored the Anchormen 14-2 to close out the game for the 90-81 final.   
 
Inside the Stats: 
  •  Southern Maine shot 54.4 percent (31-for-57) from the field for the game but had nearly 20 less possessions than RIC.  The Anchormen shot 42.7 percent (32-for-75). 
  • RIC had a strong 44-26 advantage in rebounding, including 21 offensive boards, led by seven from Kourouma. RIC scored 21 of its 90 off of second-chance buckets.
  •  With his 25 points in tonight's contest, Thomas now has 714 in his career for the Huskies.  He has 265 rebounds, 77 assists, 60 steals and 24 blocked shots.
  • Hawes established a career-high with nine assists against RIC. 
 
Up Next: 
Southern Maine travels to Castleton University on Saturday (3:00 pm) for a Little East Conference match up.  The game is the last contest of 2021 for the Huskies.  USM returns to action in January and will travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday, January 5 (7:30 pm) in LEC action.
