GORHAM, Maine – Senior
Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) and freshman
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each won a pair of matches to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team in action in a tri-match Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
Southern Maine defeated Rhode Island College 37-11, and fell to Castleton University 37-7 in its two matches on the day. With the split the Huskies are 2-1 in dual meet action. Castleton, which defeated RIC 44-12 in the opening match, improved to 3-0 in dual meets. Rhode Island College is 1-4.
Against RIC:
- Sophomore Ethan Ford (North Andover, Mass.) won by fall at 133 starting four bout swing for the Huskies. Ford's 2:42 pin over RIC's Kwesi Amoa knotted up the match at 6-6, and senior Kevin Moore gave USM the lead for good with a 5-2 decision over Jacob Duval at 141.
- Frost earned the first of his two wins on the day picking up a 10-4 decision over RIC's Michael Pestana at 149 pounds, before freshman Tyler Haynes put USM up 16-6 with a major decision victory, 13-5, over Michael Burns at 157 pounds.
- Following a loss by decision at 165, USM rattled off wins at 184, 197 and 285. Senior Juan Vernaza (Miramar, Fla./Somerset Academy) pinned Rogelio Gonzalez in 6:31, while Peavey earned his 10th win by fall of the season downing Michel Alfonso in 2:16.
Against Castleton University:
- Frost recorded the Huskies first points of the match earning a 6-3 win over Castleton's Nicholas Roeger at 149. The Huskies' rookie is now 10-4 this season.
- Peavey scored USM's final point with an 8-0 major decision win against CU's Shea Garand. Peavey, ranked second in New England is now 2-0 this season against Garand, who is ranked sixth in New England. Peavey has won seven consecutive matches.

Southern Maine is off for the semester break but will return to action in the New Year, traveling to Ursinus College in Pennsylvania for the North/South Duals on Saturday, January 8.
