Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Huskies Roll Eastern Nazarene 6-0 Behind Berthiaume Hat Track

Berthiaume Becomes All-Time Points Leader in USM Women’s Soccer History

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) scored the first three goals of the game, setting the school record for points in a career with her first, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-0 win over the Eastern Nazarene College Lions in a non-conference women's soccer tilt Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
Facing each other for the second time in the series history, USM is now 2-0 against the Lions all-time.  USM defeated ENC 3-0 on October 18, 2019 in the first meeting.

The Records:
Eastern Nazarene (2-8)
Southern Maine (7-2-2)

How It Happened:
  • Dominating possession from the start, it took until the 16th minute for the Huskies to put their first goal across the line on a wonderful strike from Berthiaume from 25 yards out on the left side.  Berthiaume received the ball and cut once to her inside past a defender before launching the ball into the far-post upper corner.  The goal gave Berthiaume the 31st goal of her career and broke a 21-year team scoring record.
  • The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Huskies despite USM holding a commanding 9-0 lead in shots on goal (17-0 in shots) after the first 45.  Eastern Nazarene starting goalkeeper sophomore Jasmine Arzu (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) made eight first half saves to keep the Lions in the game.
  • USM took a 3-0 lead on back-to-back goals from Berthiaume in the second half.  Berthiaume recorded the brace in the 51st minute and completed the hat trick in the 59th minute for her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season.
  • The Huskies added three more goals to the scoresheet, including the first career goals from freshman Aly Veilleux (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) and sophomore Billie Walter (Brunswick, Maine/Point Loma (Calif.)) in the 60th and 74th minutes respectively.
  • Sandwiched in-between Veillieux and Walter's goals, sophomore Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored her third goal of the season.  Sargent converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute after a handball in the box by the Lions.  The penalty kick make is Sargent's second of the season.

Inside The Stats:
  • Berthiaume, who set the school record for goals in a career earlier this season, broke the program's all-time career points record previously held by Husky Hall of Famer Ali Hathaway '01.  Hathaway's mark of 74 points (28 goals, 18 assists) lasted for 21 years.  Berthiaume now has 80 points on 33 goals and 14 assists.
  • USM did not allow ENC to record a shot in the contest and held a 35-0 lead in shots (21-0) in shots on goal.

The Goalkeepers:
  • Freshman Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) earned the win in net for the Huskies. She did not have to record a save but played well in the back.  It is her first collegiate win.
  • Arzu and senior Sophia Fevola (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) both saw action in net for ENC.  Arzu played 61:25, allowing four goals and making 10 saves.  Fevola played the final 28:35 making four saves and allowing two goals.
