Forgues & Sargent Lead USM to 2-2 Double OT Draw at Smith

NORTHHAMPTON, Mass.  –  Junior Emma Forgues (Gorham, Maine) chipped the keeper in the 51st minute to pull her team level as the University of Southern Maine Huskies battled the Smith College Pioneers to a 2-2 double overtime draw in non-conference women's soccer action at Smith. 
 
The meeting was the first game between the two schools in program history.  The Huskies are unbeaten in their last three games (2-0-1) and are now 4-2-2 on the road this year.  Smith is 1-1-3 in its last five games.

How It Happened:
  • Sophomore Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine) scored her fourth goal of the season and third penalty of 2021 in the 12th minute to give USM an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Smith quickly countered in the 13th minute to make it a 1-1 game on a goal from Zufan Bazzano.
  • Both teams remained even through the half and the score remained 1-1 at the break. Smith had a 14-11 edge in shots in the first 45.  USM starter Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made nine saves in the first half to keep USM at 1-1.
  • Smith scored in the first minute of the second half to snag a 2-1 lead.  Parker Ellis hit a low shot to the left corner 45:27 into the game.
  • Forgues found the equalizer in the 51st minute hit-inning a one-time shot from the top of the 18 beating the Smith goalkeeper over the top for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Both teams battled through regulation and went into overtime. Neither the Huskies nor Pioneers could find a goal in the two 10-minute overtime periods, resulting in the draw.
   
Inside The Stats:
  • In a wide-open contest, both teams combined for more than 50 shots. Smith had 17 on frame compared to 10 for Southern Maine.
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Sophomore Bre Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) played the first 45 and made nine saves. Freshman Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H/Souhegan) came on to start the second half and made a career-high six saves, including a pair of saves in the second overtime period.
  • .Noami Falkenburg and Alexandra Osuna combined to make eight saves.

            Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action at home on Wednesday (6:00 pm).  Smith travels to the United States Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday (6:00 pm) for a NEWMAC game.
