Mariners Blank Huskies 2-0 with Late Game Goals

CASTINE, Maine.  –   Sophomore Ryan Smith (Coronado, Calif.) and Freshman Branden Pasternak (Orlando, Fla.) each scored second half goals to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Castine on Tuesday night.

How It Happened:
  • Smith opened the scoring after a scoreless 71:03 when freshman Elijah Yeaton drew out the Huskies' goalkeeper junior Jacob Statires (Hampton, N.H./Bedford), before dumping the ball off to an open Smith in front of the net.
  • The game remained 1-0 until the 90th minute when the Mariners doubled their lead on a goal from Pasternak, assisted by junior Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine).
Inside the Stats:
  • The Huskies outshot the Mariners 15-9, but only had three shots on goal to the Mariners' 5. 
  • Southern Maine also had the advantage on corner kicks, 6-3. 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Junior Jacob Statires (Hampton, N.H.) made three saves for the Huskies in the loss.
  • Freshman Matthew Castella (San Antonio, Texas) and senior Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) each clocked 45 minutes of play for the Mariners. Tomlin made two saves, while Castella had one.
