Huskies Slip Past Keene State 2-1

Carson & Gonyea Connect for Game Winner

GORHAM, Maine  -   Sophomore Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored her 10th goal of the season late in the fourth quarter to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Keene State College Owls in Little East Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  
 
Facing each other for the 42nd time in series history, Southern Maine has won its last two over the Owls previously defeating KSC 1-0 on October 19, 2019.  KSC leads the series 30-11-0. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for KSC, while the win is the second consecutive for USM.  The Huskies are 3-1 in their last four games.

How It Happened:
  •  Keene State took a 1-0 lead early in the second quarter when freshman Grace Taylor (Goffstown, N.H./Portsmouth) collected a loose ball in the circle and pushed it past USM junior goalkeeper Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine).  Taylor's goal is her fifth of the season.
  • USM tied the game up seconds before the halftime whistle.  Freshman Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) collected the rebound off of a saved shot from sophomore Olivia Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and hit a shot to the far post for her third goal of the season.
  • Both teams battled through a scoreless third, registering three shots a piece in the quarter, and headed into the fourth tied up at 1-1.
  • Carson recorded her 10th goal of 2021, and her team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season, redirecting a laser of a pass from freshman Elizabeth Gonyea (Rindge, N.H./Conant).
 
Inside The Stats:
  •  Gonyea's assist marks her first point of the season for USM.  The Huskies freshman has played in all 18 games and has started 10 of them.
  • Carson is tied for the Huskies' lead in goals scored. She and freshman Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each have 10 goals on the season. 
  • USM held a narrow 14-13 lead in shots (9-7 on goal).  The Huskies also had an 11-7 lead in penalty corners.
 
The Goalkeepers:
  • Husky junior Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) turned in a strong performance in net making six saves. 
  • KSC sophomore Molly Edmark (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) made seven saves.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine remains in Little East Conference action and hosts Plymouth State University on Tuesday (4:00 pm).  Keene State hosts Castleton in an LEC match on Tuesday (6:30 pm).
