Huskies’ Roll Maine Maritime Academy 2-0

Lynch With a Goal & An Assist in Win For USM

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Katie Lynch (Bellingham, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) scored a goal and added an assist as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford.

Facing each other for the sixth time in the series history, Southern Maine now leads USM 5-0-1 all-time.  With the win the Huskies are unbeaten in the last six games at 5-0-1 and are 3-0 in their last three contests outscoring their opponents 9-2.

The Records:
Maine Maritime Academy (7-6)
Southern Maine (10-2-3)

How It Happened:
  • Senior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) hit a driven shot to the near-post side netting after receiving a forward pass from Lynch near the top of the 18 to put the Huskies up 1-0 in the eighth minute. The goal is Berthiaume's team-leading 11th of the season.
  • Lynch made it 2-0 roughly five minutes later with a perfectly executed finish alone in the box after a lofted ball over the top of the defense from junior Megan Galante (Epping, N.H.).  The goal is Lynch's third of the season, and the assist is Galante's first of 2021.
  • Maine Maritime had two strong looks in the second half to nearly pull a goal back from USM. Senior MacKenzie Carter (Ashland, Maine) sent in a dangerous ball only to have it punched way by Husky freshman goalkeeper Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) in the 77th minute. Senior Jillian Holden (Madison, Maine/Madison Area Memorial) hit the cross bar on the follow up, but MMA remained without a goal.

Inside The Stats:
  •  USM outshot MMA 14-0 in the first half and 7-2 in the second half for a 21-2 advantage.
  • Berthiaume now has 35 goals in her career.  The Huskies' all-time leading goal scorer and points leader (84) has 11 goals and three assists this season for 25 points.  Her 11 goals are in a four-way tie for fifth in single season records.
  • The Huskies' 10 wins so far in 2021 mark just the fourth time in program-history that the team has double-digit victories. USM last had more than 10 wins in 2018 when they set a program record with 14 wins (14-5-1).  Head Coach Seth Benjamin owns two of those seasons (2018, 2021).

The Goalkeepers:
  • Freshman Hunter Stonebraker (Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) made one second-half save to earn the win for the Huskies. Stonebraker is 2-0-1 on the season.
  • MMA junior goalkeeper Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had a strong game in net for the Mariners making eight saves.
