GORHAM, Maine – Trailing 1-0, the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team scored four goals in a span of 10 minute to earn a 4-1 win over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Facing each other for the first time since 2019 (a 1-0 double overtime win for the Huskies), USM extends its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). The Huskies are now 5-0-1 at home on the season. RIC has lost its last four games.
The Records:
Rhode Island College (2-11, 1-5 LEC)
Southern Maine (8-2-3, 2-2-1 LEC)
How It Happened:
- Serena Forte put RIC ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute tapping in her team-leading sixth goal of the season off of an assist from Alysa Silvestre. After an unsuccessful clearing attempt by USM in its own 18, Silvestre controlled a loose ball and touched it on to Forte who was perched directly in front of a wide open net for the lead.
- Sophomore Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering) pulled her team even in the 22nd minute, hitting a laser of a direct kick from approximately 24 yards out to the top right corner of the goal. The equalizer is Sargent's fifth goal of the season.
- Coming on as a first half sub, sophomore Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) made an immediate impact scoring her seventh goal of the season in the 27th minute to put the Huskies up 2-1. Gould used her speed to run onto a ball played over the top of the RIC defense. With her first shot stopped by RIC freshman goalkeeper Regan Kerecz (Tolland, Conn.), Gould stayed with the rebound and slotted it into the back of the net.
- Senior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) made it 3-1 in the 29th minute finishing a centering pass from Gould under pressure for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
- Gould scored the Huskies final goal of the game in the 32nd minute when Sargent played a through ball into the Huskies' attacking third from the back freeing Gould into space. Gould took one touch and hit the ball to the left side of the net for her eighth marker of the season.
