Late Goal By Arsenault Lifts USM Over UMF 2-1

Arsenault & Drinkwater Score For Huskies

The win is the third consecutive victory for the Huskies.

The Records:
UMaine Farmington (5-6)
Southern Maine (9-6)
How It Happened:
  • Both teams battled closely in the first half, and were in a scoreless draw at the break.  UMF created the most scoring threats in the first 30 minutes registering three shots on goal, and nearly had the first goal of the game in the 20th minute.  Senior Jade Petrie (Wells, Maine) put one on frame for the Beavers, but USM freshman Julia Edwards (Gorham, Maine) cleared the ball off the line to keep it 0-0 and earn a defensive save.
  • After being outshot 5-4 in the first half, Southern Maine dominated possession and registered 10 shots in the third quarter.  Despite the pressure, USM did not get on the board until the 42nd minute following a well-executed penalty corner. Sophomore Mary Keef (Westbrook, Maine) fed the ball to freshman Adelle Surette (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) who then sent the ball in to classmate Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle).  Drinkwater redirected Surette's centering pass, scoring her ninth goal of the season.
  • UMF countered early in the fourth quarter tying the game up at 1-1 in the 51st minute on a strong individual effort from senior Alex Bessey (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain).  Bessey took the ball from the midfield and beat a trio of Husky defenders to find her self one-on-one in the circle, beating USM goalkeeper Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) to the near post for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
  • Arsenault delivered the game-winner with just over four minutes remaining redirecting a ball sent in from freshman Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) from the right side.  The goal was Arsenault's fifth of the season.

Inside The Stats:
  •  After being outshot by UMF 5-4 in the opening half, USM led the Beavers in shots 14-1 in the second half.
  • Both teams benefitted from solid defensive plays. Seniors Gracie Foss (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Lydia Wasina (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) each had a defensive save for UMF.  USM freshman Julia Edwards (Gorham, Maine) also had a defensive save.
