Ellis Propels Huskies to 2-1 Double Overtime Win at Framingham State

Ellis Scores Seventh Game-Winning Goal of Her Career

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.  -  Senior Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored the game-winning goal two minutes into the second overtime period to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 double overtime win over the Framingham State University Rams Tuesday night at Maple Street Field.

Playing in their second overtime game of the 2021 season, the Huskies are 1-1 in extra time this season. With its 2-1 win over the Rams, Southern Maine has now defeated Framingham State in its last eight meetings. Southern Maine leads the 26-game series, 20-6.

The Records:
Southern Maine (8-6, 6-2 Little East)
Framingham State (4-7, 1- Little East)

How It Happened:
  • Ellis scored both of the Huskies' goals, scoring her first of the game just 32 seconds into the contest to put USM ahead early. Ellis scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from freshman Adelle Surrette (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill).
  • USM maintained its 1-0 advantage until the 20th minute when Emma Bailey converted a pass from Abigail Clark 19:39 into the contest.
  • Following Bailey's goal both teams were unable to put one into the net before the end of regulation.  Framingham, which was outshot by USM 7-3 in the first half, reversed the tide in the second half, outshooting the Huskies 8-4.
  • Both teams put four shots on target in the second half, but USM junior goalie Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) was up to the task keeping the Rams off of the board.  FSU goalkeeper Grace Pushor was also strong in net, making four saves, including stopping a penalty stroke in the 43rd minute.
  • In the first overtime, FSU had the momentum earning a penalty corner early and putting a pair of shots on target, but Kiklis made back-to-back saves, sending the game to double overtime.
  • USM opened the second overtime period with pressure from freshman Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine).  Banks earned the Huskies back-to-back penalty corners before finding Ellis at 72:00 for the game-winner, and Ellis' sixth goal of the season.
