Huskies’ Student-Athlete Sophia Slovenski Taking Part in Maine Girls & Women in Sports Committee Panel

Voices of Women in Sport: Empowering Girls for Life – January 21, 2021

GORHAM, Maine  – University of Southern Maine junior Sophia Slovenski (Cape Neddick, Maine) of the Huskies' women's indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball teams will be serving as a panelist for the upcoming The Maine Girls & Women in Sports Committee virtual event: Voices of Women in Sport: Empowering Girls for Life – A Toolbox for Middle School Athletes and Beyond. 

            The second virtual event hosted and presented by The Maine Girls & Women in Sports Committee will take place on January 21 from 6:30 pm  - 8:00 pm, and will feature panelists Lani Silversides, Founder of Strong Girls United Foundation; Clara Brown, Paracyclist, Team USA and Ashley Potvin-Fulford, Head Women's Rugby Coach at University of New England.

            This virtual event welcomes middle school athletes and beyond as The Maine Girls & Women in Sports Committee continues to countdown to National Girls and Women in Sports Day in February.  Interested participants can register through this link:  https://tinyurl.com/yadfh9y3

            As a member of the Huskies' indoor and outdoor track & field teams, Slovenski earned 2020 United States Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American and All-Region honors in the pole vault.  A transfer to Southern Maine from Bowdoin College, Slovenski is studying Exercise Science and earned USTFCCA All-Academic honors during the 2019-2020 season. 

            Helping the Huskies to their 20th Little East Conference indoor track & field championship last season, Slovenski claimed the individual title in the pole vault with a winning height of 3.25-meters, and scored valuable points for Southern Maine with a fourth place spot in the triple jump (10.42 meters).  During the season, Slovenski qualified to compete in the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championship with a school and career-best pole vault of 3.82 meters (12 feet, 6.25 inches).  Slovenski was seeded ninth for the championship, which was cancelled due to on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Earning a 4.0 GPA last year, Slovenski was named to the LEC All-Academic team and earned William B. Wise Scholar Athlete honors.
