Box Score D'Aloisio Sets Career Mark with His Fifth Career Shutout
GORTHAM, Maine -- Junior Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) stopped 17 shots and sophomores Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) and Bobby Kinsey (Leechburg, Pa.) scored goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies shut out the visiting Castleton University Spartans, 2-0, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men 's game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gives the Huskies a three-point weekend after earning a 2-2 tie with fourth-ranked Norwich University on Friday. The Huskies improved to 5-9-3 overall, 4-5-2 in NEHC play. The Spartans dropped their third straight game to slip to 5-11-2 overall, 3-7-1 in conference play.
D'Aloisio provided steady goaltending for the Huskies stopping seven shots in both the first and second periods. The shutout was the third of the season for the third-year netminder, and the fifth of his career to break the school record he shared with David Beckles and Braely Torris.
Gardiner tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal firing in the rebound of a shot from sophomore Matthew Smith (St. John's, Nfld.) at 8:41 of the first period. Senior Cody Braga's (Middleboro, Mass.) initial shot, and Smith's second attempt, were stop by Castleton sophomore goalie Kyle Alaverdy (Grand Falls-Windsor, Nfld.), but the second rebound went right out to Gardiner 20 feet out in front, and the winger found the net for his second goal of the season.
D'Aloisio and Alaverdy kept the score locked at 1-0 until Kinsey added the insurance marker at 8:37 of the third period. Sophomores Michael Green (Baie d'Urfã, Quebec) and Adam Withers (Kenora, Ontario) brought the puck into the zone with Green getting the first shot. Alaverdy stopped the drive, but Kinsey was in the right spot to stuff the puck home for his first goal of the season.
Southern Maine finished the game with a 42-17 edge in shots on goal. Alaverdy played well making 40 saves to keep the Spartans in the game. Neither side was able to convert on the power play as the Huskies were 0 for 4 and the Spartans finished 0 for 3.
The Huskies head south next weekend to take on the University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday (7 p.m.) and Babson College on Saturday (4 p.m.). Castleton returns home to host Hobart College on Friday (7 p.m.) and Skidmore College on Saturday (4 p.m.). All four games are NEHC contests.
