Box Score Withers Scores Two for the Huskies
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior Christian Capello (Wellesley, Mass.) and junior Bradley Ingersoll (Wax Haw, N.C.) each scored two goals as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears defeated the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 6-3 in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday evening at Watson Arena.
The win was the third straight for the Polar Bears since losing to the Huskies, 2-0, nine days ago, and improved their record to 8-5-0 overall. The Huskies dropped their third straight to slip to 4-9-2 overall.
Senior Pat Geary (Libertyville, Ill.) and Capello scored in the opening nine minutes to give the home side a 2-0 lead. USM sophomore Adam Withers (Kenora, Ontario) cut the deficit in half at 17:21 with his fifth goal of the season, assisted by classmate Matthew Smith (St. John's, Newfoundland).
Withers second goal of the game at 1:12 of the second period, set up by senior Tristan Dundas (Chilliwack, B.C.), tied the score at 2-2.
Sophomore Graham Rutledge (Halifax, N.S.) gave the Polar Bears the lead for good breaking the tie at 8:21with the first of three Bowdoin power-play goals. Ingersoll's first goal of the game at 17:19, also on the power play, proved to be the game winner.
Twenty-nine seconds after Ingersoll scored, USM senior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) scored his first marker of the season to make the score 4-3 after two period.
Ingersoll potted his second power-play goal of the night at 11:53 of the third to restore the Polar Bears two-goal lead. Capello netted the final goal of the game at 15:58.
Junior goalie Alex Zafonte (Concord, Mass.) picked up his eighth win of the season for Bowdoin making 15 saves. Junior Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) stopped 27 shots at the other end.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 33-18 edge in shots on goal, and successfully converted three of four power plays. Southern Maine was unsuccessful on four power plays.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday (7 p.m.) hosting fourth-ranked Norwich University for a New England Hockey Conference game. Bowdoin is on the road this weekend playing at top-ranked Trinity College on Friday (7 p.m.) and Wesleyan College on Saturday (3 p.m.).
