Freeman Nets Two As Southern Maine Rolls Thomas 4-0 in Season Opener

WATERVILLE, Maine  –  After battling to a 0-0 draw after the first half of play, senior Madi Freeman (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored back-to-back goals in the 68thand 76th minute to propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-0 win over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference women's soccer game Friday afternoon at Smith Field. 

With the win, Southern Maine starts its 2019 campaign at 1-0. Thomas is 0-1 with the loss. Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest and will travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday (1:00 pm). 

Despite outshooting the Terriers 13-4 in the first half, the Huskies were unable to find the back of the net as TC goalkeeper Isabelle Lang made six saves.  The Huskies continued the trend in the second half, registering five shots to one against Thomas, before Freeman broke through for a goal. She was assisted on the play by junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine).  Eight minutes later Berthiaume and Freeman connected again to double the USM advantage.  

Minutes later, Freeman helped make it 3-0 in the 79th minute finding junior Elise Porter (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) for a goal.  Southern Maine made it 4-0 in the 86th minute as sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) for an unassisted tally. 

USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) made a pair of saves to earn a shutout in her intercollegiate debut. TC's Lang made nine saves and faced 13 shots on goal in 85:38 of action.  Caitlin Labbe played the final 4:22 and did not face a shot.
